Oshogatsu, or Japanese New Year is celebrated on Jan 1 and thought to be the most important holiday in Japan. Although our event is a little later in the year we use this opportunity to immerse ourselves in Japanese culture. We are fortunate to have both Japanese members as well as members that are frequent travellers to Japan share with us their knowledge of this culture. See the program below for what they have planned for us to enjoy.

How to wear a Kimono

The Kimono is an iconic garment synonymous with Japanese culture. Shizuyo Hirohi will be demonstrating how to properly wear one. We will also have some Kimonos and Obis on display to have a closer look at these beautiful garments.

Osha tea ceremony

Shizuyo Hirohi will demonstrate a simple version of the tea ceremony.

Nengajo and Mizuhiki

A very popular Oshogatsu custom is the sending of New Year's cards, known as a Nengajo. Datin Ong Kid Ching, a frequent traveller to Japan has brought back supplies from her most recent trip to hold a workshop in Mizuhiki.  Made from washi paper, mizuhiki is a colorful cord that is tied in knots and then used as decoration. Attendees will take home a Nengajo decorated with a Mizuhiki.
