Ikebana JB @ Kreatif Festival, Iskarnival Iskandar Puteri 2016

Ikebana International Johor Bahru Chapter 235 will be participating in the Kreatif Festival, part of Iskarnival Iskandar Puteri 2016 by exhibiting at the White Box at Mall of Medini. 


The exhibition will run for 2 days and will be part of a celebration of arts, film, design and performance.  Members of our chapter will have the opportunity to exhibit our floral arrangements as part of this festival's Visual Arts presentation in this beautiful new Art Gallery space. The theme for our exhibition is Johor in Bloom, a celebration of our local flora, local arts and craft and the spirit of its continuing ability to grow and bloom.

The festival will be an extraordinary mix of creative practises and ideas ranging from our chapter - one of the earliest cultural arts communities in Johor Bahru practising floral art forms that trace back to the 16th century to some of the newest technologically driven ones.

Program
We kick off the year with a Hari Raya Celebration at Selasih Sri Gelam in their recently renovated heritage building. The event is also our membership drive for 2016 - 2017 and we welcome guests interested in joining our chapter. The event will be an opportunity to learn more about our club and whats in store for the year ahead. 

Our event has a Nusantara feel with our guest  demonstrator Anna Kwan, an Indonesian living in Singapore and active member of Ikebana International International Chapter 135. She will be demonstrating her expertise from the Sogetsu School.

Side Displays
We will have side displays of floral arrangements themed for the event - inspired by local Malay or Nusantara style. Please communicate your interest to participate to your group leaders or the Program Chairman. 

Ways & Means
We will have some Ikebana related merchandise  for sale - lookout for some bargains that will be useful to students of Ikebana.

Anna Kwan 
Anna is a practioner of the Sogetsu School under Mrs Kim of Singapore and a second grade teacher.

She was Past Vice President of II Singapore 2008 - 2010, Past President of II Singapore 2010 - 2012, Exhibition Chairman Paragon 2010 - 2015 and continues to be an active volunteer in the chapter's committee She has participated in many Ikebana exhibitions and events locally and overseas.

Exhibition
Our Annual exhibition for 2016 will be held in the Concourse of City Square. The exhibition will be officially opened on  9th April 2016 by our special guest, the Ambassador of Japan, Dr Makio Miyagawa. 

Demonstration
Ms. Lansing Chen, our guest demonstrator is a past president of Ikebana International Taiwan Chapter 105 and Organizing Chairman of the 13th Asian II Conference held recently in Taipei. She is a practitioner of the Shofu-Ryu (Shofu School) since 1971 and founder of the Shofu Ikebana Association in Taiwan which she is a past president. 

This school was founded by first generation Headmistress Oshigawa Joshui in 1916. It was introduced into Taiwan in 1940. Shofu Ikebana Association was established in March 20, 2001 by a group of Shofu-Ryu teachers in Taiwan. The traditional Shofu-Ryu ikebana advocates expression of the beauty of nature and hardly uses any artificial material, yet it has less restriction of classical rules of arrangement than other Ikebana schools. It features lively expression, vivid colors, creativity and modern spirit. Lately it also has various creative and experimental ikebana styles, to accommodate the versatility of modern life.

PROGRAM

Shoshun literally means  Early Spring and is a greeting traditionally used at Japanese New Year or Oshogatsu. We welcome in the New Year with this strong Japanese themed event in keeping with our chapter's mission in celebrating the art of Ikebana as well as Japanese culture.

Japanese Style

Lets have some fun dressing up in Japanese style to welcome in the New Year. For more incentive - we are going to reward the best dressed with a special prize. Anything from a traditional Kimono to Japanese inspired outfits and accessories are welcomed. We will have Japanese themed backgrounds to better photograph and capture everyone's efforts.

Mr Hideaki Fujita, principal of the Japanese School, Johor Bahru will give a short talk describing the significance of Oshogatsu to the Japanese.








Side Display

There will be a side display of arrangements by members, which will include participation by President of Ikebana International Singapore Chapter, Peggy Loh.

Please arrange with your teachers if you wish to participate, and do so promptly as spaces are limited.





Origami

A kimono origami attached to a Nengajo - a traditional Japanese New Year's card will be a souvenir for guests to take home.









Demonstration by two advanced students

There will be a demonstration of two arrangements each by advanced students Angela Kek and Chris Parry that reflects the point of view of their respective Ikebana schools.



Angela Kek, a 3rd Grade, Sankyu Shihan Diploma holder from Sogetsu School, has been practising Ikebana with her sensei Komon Josephine Chia for over 5 years.

Her first demonstration was in Perth, Australia, at the request of a friend for a group of ladies, with most of the fresh cut materials from a home garden.

Currently the Vice President of Ikebana International Singapore Chapter 135, her experience includes participation in exhibitions at Paragon Singapore, Japan Creative Centre, Asian Civilisation
Museum, and has collaborated with artists of various mediums at The National Museum, and Isetan Singapore.




                                                   
Chris Parry is an Assistant Teacher Certificate Holder from the Ohara School, practising for 4 years under Datin Ong Kid Ching.

His first demonstration was a joint one with his sensei at the Singapore Chapter's Chinese New Year event in 2014.

Chris is the newsletter chairman for our chapter and has exhibited regularly here in Johor Bahru, and occasionally at Ikebana International events in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore

This workshop is a joint program with the  Sogetsu Study Group  of Johor Bahru facilitated by Peter Chin, President Floral Designers Society of Singapore. Peter Chin is is an active member of floral circles of the Asia Pacific region winning many floral competitions locally and overseas. He owns a floral business and has been a practitioner of Sogetsu School of Ikebana since 1975. He will be demonstrating two Nageira (upright ) designs using black bamboo.

Please be punctual in view of potential traffic jam. Five passengers to a car. For smooth coordination NO personal transport is allowed. Brief description of Singapore Botanical Gardens:
A 74-hectares site situated at the heart of the City of Singapore. A world class scientific institution used for both conservation and education . The cultural landscape includes a rich variety of historic features, plantings and buildings that demonstrate the development of the garden since its creation in 1859. It has been an important center for science, research and plant conservation, notably in connection with the cultivation of rubber plantations in SEA since 1875.
The Singapore Botanical Gardens has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site at the 39th session of the World Heritage Committee in Germany, Bonn in July 2015. The Gardens is the first and only tropical botanical garden on their World Heritage List. It is the 1st in Asia and 3rd botanical gardens inscribed in the world following Orto Botanico di Padova and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

This session is for new members and current board members.







We are reviving a tradition in our chapter of welcoming our new members to an informal orientation session with our Chapter Board. The session will be hosted by our president Datin Ong Kid Ching at her home

New members will get to introduce themselves to our committee members and each other, as well as learn the roles and functions of our board, and how our chapter functions. There will be an overview about Ikebana, Ikebana International and the benefits of membership.

There will be a short talk on how environmental issues relate to Ikebana by newsletter secretary and founder of Johor Green, Chris Parry.

2 Schools Workshop
Our chapter is excited to host a double workshop to learn ikebana from 2 schools that are less familiar to us. We are grateful to our facilitators from Singapore, Dr. Leonard Lim of the Ikenobo School and Anju Bhardwaj of the Ichiyo School for agreeing to facilitate this workshop for us. It will be insightful to see how these practitioners, using the same materials, show us how to express Ikebana from the perspective of the oldest 16th century school, Ikenobo and the modern 20th century Ichiyo school.

All materials will be provided but attendees must bring their own cutters.

The workshop venue is the recently opened Sea & Saw Cafe along the waterfront, so come for an enlightening Ikebana by the Sea in a beautifully designed space.

Members are encouraged to display arrangements at this event - please express your interest to your Ikebana teachers to coordinate with Program chairman Lira.



Dr. Leonard Lim is a practising Dental Surgeon and President of the Ikenobo Chapter of Singapore active in demonstrations,workshops and exhibitions of this school in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, China, Macau, Japan, South Africa and India. 

He is the author of "Experiencing Ikebana", a coffee table book introducing Ikenobo freestyle (now updated and reprinted as "Essential Ikebana").

Dr Lim conducts regular lessons in Singapore and travels to Ikenobo Headquarters in Kyoto four times a year to deepen his knowledge of Ikebana.



Anju Bhardwaj is a qualified Ikebana Instructor from the Ichiyo School, trained under senior Ichiyo teachers in Yokohama, Japan. She has been associated with Ikebana since 2006 and currently serves on the committee of Ikebana International Singapore Chapter 135 as corresponding secretary. She actively gives demonstrations and participates in exhibitions on behalf of II. 

Time permitting, she conducts private ikebana lessons. Anju is passionate about flowers and has worked with them since childhood. She believes that arranging flowers is a life enhancing ritual that gives meaning and joy to urban living.

There will be an exhibition of 8 arrangements representing Sogetsu, Ohara and Ikenobo schools which will be utilised by our guest speaker to demonstrate Ikebana's role to enhance the home interior.

Her teacher are Mrs Kazue Kato Kim and Mr Bernard Tay. She has participated in many exhibitions in Asia.

Theme
The theme this year is Heritage of Flowers, celebrating the heritage of our chapter with a special tribute to Charter President YAM Tunku Shahariah and also the heritage of our Ikebana schools.

Exhibition
The exhibition will be housed in the entrance lobby of the the Puteri Pacific Hotel. Members of the club and invited guests will be preparing ikebana arrangements representative of the schools of Ikebana that they are studying. The exhibition will be laid out into Ikenobo, Ohara and Sogetsu sections.

Programme
11am: Official opening and viewing of  the exhibition.

11.45am - 12.15pm: Welcome Speech by President and Heritage presentation

12.15pm - 1.15pm: An Ikebana demonstration of Five Schools of Ikebana.

The demonstrators will be Tan Bo Tan for the Ikenobo School, Momoko Emmett for Ryuseiha, Datin Ong Kid Ching for Ohara, Shirley Cheah for Sogetsu and Anju Bhardwaj for Ichiyo. Demonstrators will be provided one common material for each of the two arrangements that they will be demonstrating simultaneously, otherwise containers and other materials will be chosen by the individual demonstrators to express the style of their affiliated school.

The 4th program for 2012 - 2013 will be a Sogetsu demonstration and workshop with Shirley Cheah.

'Sogetsu Home Sweet Home' is a demonstration and workshop presented by Shirley Cheah who is a Grade One Master of the Sogetsu school of Ikebana, Japan. She was awarded the Japanese Flower name " ichiran” meaning orchid and was honored by the Sogetsu School with a higher Master's ranking.

Spreading the knowledge and expressing the beauty of nature through our SOGETSU is one of the reasons that she is teaching Sogetsu Floral arrangements. She is a member and a past President of the Ikebana International Johor Bahru. She is also a member of the Sogetsu Teachers Association.

Shirley conducts classes of ikebana Sogetsu from her studio in her Johor Bahru home. She conducts examinations for her students and have recently issued certifications from Japan to her successful students. She has participated in many workshops, regional conferences and also the 10th Convention that was held in Tokyo in the year 2010.

She also demonstrates Ikebana and has been invited by the Art and Craft Center for their grand annual event at Karyaneka - Cultural and Art Center in Kuala Lumpur. The fellowship with her students and friends; getting together to share the passion in Sogetsu is a joyful time for us. “Friendship through flowers “our Ikebana Motto aptly describes this club.


"SOGETSU design has an extra charm with materials coming from the garden and arranged in simple lines in a simple vessel. Sogetsu uses only fresh flowers and has 3 main lines for its creative work.

SOGETSU encourages "go green or use recycled items” and all kinds of natural material like dried wood, branches are used as structures. Bare shrubs and bushes are a never ending source of shapes to be used. The infinity creation with flowers by Sogetsu...."

Program:
Demonstration will focus on the coming Chinese New Year Festive Celebration and the pieces will be sold in a lucky draw.
