Message from Our President
I hope you are enjoying our program events for this year as much as I am. It was a great pleasure recently to become familiar with Ryuseiha, yet another philosophy of floral arrangement in the rich world of Ikebana. It was also inspiring to visit the award winning Gardens by the Bay to see how artful the natural world of plants can be.
We continue this journey of appreciation of the beautiful art of Japanese floral arrangement in upcoming programs by looking more closely at Japanese culture and the craft of ceramics. All this of course in the good company of our members who share their enthusiasm and expertise in organizing and participating in these events.

Previous Events
Ryuseiha in the Tropics
Our first event for the year 2012 - 2013 was memorable for a tremendous turnout of members and guests and a stimulating demonstration of Ryuseiha, an Ikebana style that is less well known.
Momoko Emmet was our guest demonstrator who dazzled us with arrangements that demonstrated her artistry. Using materials easily found in our tropical Malaysian gardens like Ixora, Spider Lilies, Torch Ginger and Coleus she transformed them into sophisticated and artful arrangements.
She also introduced us to fascinating conceptual ideas peculiar to Ryuseiha like incorporating views of an arrangement through a glass vase. Momoko enlisted the help of fellow chapter member Bernard Lim to assist her and the use of Datin Ong Kid Ching's exquisite ceramics for her much enjoyed demonstration.
As this was a membership drive event, our membership chair, Datin Ong Kid Ching gave a short talk about membership and what it means to be a member of both our local chapter and the global organization of Ikebana International.
We enjoyed a delicious Indonesian meal at the elegant Indonesian Corner restaurant with the fine company of many visiting members from the Singapore Chapter including current president Marvina Low as well as a special guest from the Karachi chapter, past president Shirin Poonwala.
Gardens by the Bay day trip
It was an early start for members and their guests as we set off across the causeway for a day trip to the the award winning Gardens by the Bay. Our second event for the year 2012 - 2013 was an outing to this world class destination where we kicked off our tour at the Supertree Grove - see pic above.
First stop - Cloud Forest, where we marvelled at the waterfall and all the views and enjoyed the simulation of cool misty mountain weather. The plants here included rare orchids and ferns that clung to the 'mountain' walls.
Next - the Flower Dome where we enjoyed the cool dry Mediterranean scenes we might find in a garden in Tuscany complete with a 500 year old olive tree or on a park bench in an California or one in Australia. Baobabs and succulents were a special feature here.
Before we knew it it was time to head out for lunch and enjoy the panoramic views at Sky 57, Marina Sands and savour the culinary delights served up by celebrity chef Justin Quek.

A Passion for Ohara
Committee member Datin Ong Kid Ching has been busy lately with demonstrations and exhibitions that showcase her skill and love of the Ohara School of Ikebana. She is President of the Singapore chapter of the Ohara School of Ikebana and also an accomplished ceramist who regularly exhibits her work. Her ceramic work defines and complements her Ikebana artistry as she creates vessels that are harmonious with her floral arrangements and vice versa.
Enjoy a selection of photos from these recent demonstrations and exhibitions in this album on our facebook page. The photos demonstrate some of the key classifications of the Ohara style.
Datin Kid Ching currently holds an Instructor's Certificate from the Ohara School and will obtain a First Master in summer 2013. See our page about Ikebana Lessons to find out more about how you can take lessons with her. You can find out more about the Ohara school on Ikebana International's site as well as the Ohara School's official website and facebook page.
