PROGRAM

Shoshun literally means  Early Spring and is a greeting traditionally used at Japanese New Year or Oshogatsu. We welcome in the New Year with this strong Japanese themed event in keeping with our chapter's mission in celebrating the art of Ikebana as well as Japanese culture.

Japanese Style

Lets have some fun dressing up in Japanese style to welcome in the New Year. For more incentive - we are going to reward the best dressed with a special prize. Anything from a traditional Kimono to Japanese inspired outfits and accessories are welcomed. We will have Japanese themed backgrounds to better photograph and capture everyone's efforts.

Japanese New Year

Mr Hideaki Fujita, principal of the Japanese School, Johor Bahru will give a short talk describing the significance of Oshogatsu to the Japanese.

Side Display

There will be a side display of arrangements by members, which will include participation by President of Ikebana International Singapore Chapter, Peggy Loh.

Please arrange with your teachers if you wish to participate, and do so promptly as spaces are limited.

Origami

A kimono origami attached to a Nengajo - a traditional Japanese New Year's card will be a souvenir for guests to take home.

Demonstration by two advanced students

There will be a demonstration of two arrangements each by advanced students Angela Kek and Chris Parry that reflects the point of view of their respective Ikebana schools.

Angela Kek, a 3rd Grade, Sankyu Shihan Diploma holder from Sogetsu School, has been practising Ikebana with her sensei Komon Josephine Chia for over 5 years.

Her first demonstration was in Perth, Australia, at the request of a friend for a group of ladies, with most of the fresh cut materials from a home garden.

Currently the Vice President of Ikebana International Singapore Chapter 135, her experience includes participation in exhibitions at Paragon Singapore, Japan Creative Centre, Asian Civilisation
Museum, and has collaborated with artists of various mediums at The National Museum, and Isetan Singapore.

Chris Parry is an Assistant Teacher Certificate Holder from the Ohara School, practising for 4 years under Datin Ong Kid Ching.

His first demonstration was a joint one with his sensei at the Singapore Chapter's Chinese New Year event in 2014.

Chris is the newsletter chairman for our chapter and has exhibited regularly here in Johor Bahru, and occasionally at Ikebana International events in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore
