Message from Our President

'October gave a party;
The leaves by hundreds came-
The Chestnuts, Oaks, and Maples,
And leaves of every name.
The Sunshine spread a carpet,
And everything was grand,
Miss Weather led the dancing,
Professor Wind the band.'

October is autumn in the temperate countries. There are already beautiful autumn flowers in bloom with the yellowing leaves on the trees in cool comfortable air. Unfortunately, our weather here is nothing but sweltering heat, high humidity, and we are suffering and suffocating in a thick haze brought in by the fire in Indonesia.

I am sad to announce that our much awaited October outing to the UNESCO Heritage Site - the Botanical Gardens in Singapore has to be postponed indefinitely due the the haze making it a health hazard to be outdoors. Nonetheless, the happy news is, that the JB Sogetsu Study of Group has welcomed us to a joint event on 6th October - A very interesting 'Bamboo workshop' conducted by Peter Chin, President of Floral Designers Society of Singapore. We look toward to an interesting afternoon.

In the month of December, we will join our sister Chapter 135 across the Causeway to celebrate Christmas together. Oshogatsu will be celebrated in January 2016 with a touch of Japanese fanfare. Please do not miss the program.

Our Annual Event will be held in City Square Mall Foyer with an ikebana demonstration by an Ikebana master from overseas and exhibition by members & invited ikebana practitioners. Please mark the dates in your diary - 8th to 10th April 2016.

I look forward to your participation in all the programs the Board will organize for you in the next few months and experience the true art of Ikebana and the spirit of Friendship through Flowers.

PREVIOUS EVENTS

Ikebana by the Sea, 11 August, 2015

It was a memorable day by the sea for our chapter with a large turnout for this event. The venue, a heritage Spanish bungalow on the waterfront converted to the new cafe Sea and Saw was a perfect fit for our workshop that took up its various rooms.

A small exhibition of members arrangements that graced the foyer was enjoyed by members as the arrived and caught up with each other and also perused the items in our popular bazaar.

We then moved inside for the the two workshops ahead, the first by Anju Bhardwaj demonstrating an arrangement from the Ichiyo School followed by Dr. Leonard Lim with his expression of the Ikenobo School.

Anju showed us an upright style while Dr Lim did a freestyle, both using the same material  of torch ginger flowers, green chrysanthemums and Japanese bamboo which allowed us to see the different approaches of the two schools. Both facilitators took great effort to explain their choices and actions that represented the methodology of their respective schools. They then assisted all the members who were tasked to repeat their arrangements with suggestions for improvements and some further explanations. The concentration in the room was so intense you could hear a pin drop but it was also clear that we were all enjoying the effort.

The arrangements created, enhanced by a lovely paper origami container with gold brushwork were a very satisfying outcome of this workshop and the hardworking participants, not forgetting the excellent facilitators and hard working board members who prepared all the materials were rewarded with a delicious lunch.

We thank the President of Ikebana International Singapore, Peggy Loh along with a few members from Chapter 135 for joining us for this event including Christiane who was thrilled to win a ceramic vase kindly donated by our President Datin Kid Ching for the lucky draw.

New Members Tea, 9 July 2015

Our President, Datin Ong Kid Ching, welcomed the chapter board and  our new 2015- 2016 members for a welcome tea at her residence. Special guest at the event was Consul General of Singapore Ian Mak and a member of his staff.

On display were a few floral arrangements of both Sogetsu and Ohara school which sparked conversation about the two styles and the interesting choice of materials.

This was an opportunity for both the members of the board to describe their portfolios and the new members to let us know a little more about themselves. Attending the event were: Elise, an entrepeneur with a printing business, Tony, an independent interior designer, Catherine who works in the travel industry and has her own agency and Masako, a previous member of the Tokyo and Bangkok chapter of Ikebana International and is an experienced practitioner of Ikenobo.

Newsletter secretary Chris Parry gave a talk on 'Sustainable Ikebana' which combines the subject of ikebana with sustainability  related to the organization that he runs - Johor Green.

We are pleased to welcome these distinguished new additions to our chapter and look forward to their continued participation in our activities.
