Message from Our President

Unity is strength...
Where there is teamwork & collaboration,
Wonderful things can be achieved.

Our Annual Exhibition was a fine example of the above quote. It was quite a mammoth task to have a foreign ikebana master accepting our invitation to be our guest demonstrator. Whilst our invitation was to Lansing Chen of Shofu-ryu alone, she brought a team of four which made the logistics planning a little more complex.

I would like to thank the organizing committee for working so cohesively in making the event such a successful one. We are also very grateful for the participation of the four members from the Singapore Chapter 135 whose works added glory to our exhibition. The past president of II KL chapter 72, Datin Paulene was present at the opening with her husband Tunku Mu'tamir. She sang high praises of the event and  thought the KL Chapter should emulate us in this area. Of course, the presence of the Counsellor from the Japanese Embassy Mr H. Orikasa made all the difference.

I would like to thank all the members who participated in the exhibition which drew big crowds and praises from all those who attended. Without your effort, there would have been no show.

Once again I would like to conclude by emphasising that the success of the event was entirely due to teamwork. Well done ALL

Friendship Through Flowers,

Datin Ong Kid Ching

IKEBANA - THE WAY OF FLOWERS, 8-10 APRIL, 2016, BY PEGGY LOH

A team of guest demonstrators from Ikebana International
Club Taiwan, creating an arrangement together
For three days, the concourse of Johor Baru City Square was decorated with a showcase of artistic flower arrangements for the recent Annual Exhibition of Ikebana International Johor Baru (IIJB) chapter 235 themed, “The Way of Flowers.”

From April 8 to 10, visitors to JB City Square had the pleasure of enjoying the art of Japanese flower arrangements presented in the Ikebana schools of Ohara, Sogetsu, Ikenobo and Shofu-Ryu.

The exhibition, officially opened on April 9, was graced by Counsellor from the Embassy of Japan in Kuala Lumpur, Hiroyuki Orikasa, IIJB charter president, Tunku Shahariah Abdul Rahman and distinguished guests from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

Hiroyuki commended members of IIJB for their efforts in preserving the art of Ikebana in Malaysia and hoped that “The Way of Flowers” would further advance mutual understanding between the two nations.

The flower arrangements in the exhibition were presented by members of IIJB and friends from the Ikebana Singapore chapter as well as members from Ikebana International Club Taiwan chapter 105.

Special guests for the event were a team from Taiwan led by Lansing Chen, past president of the Ikebana International Club Taiwan chapter 105 and practitioner of the Ikebana school of Shofu-Ryu.

Chen, the founder of the Shofu-Ryu Ikebana Association in Taiwan, and her team presented an interesting demonstration of Ikebana arrangements in the school of Shofu-Ryu.

This was the first time fans of Ikebana in Johor Baru had the opportunity to appreciate the tradition of Shofu-Ryu Ikebana which advocates expression of Nature’s beauty with hardly any use of artificial material, in vivid colours, creativity and lively illustrations of the modern spirit.

Members of IIJB took the opportunity to celebrate the
birthday of charter president, Tunku Shahariah
“I wish to thank the management of JB City Square, our venue partner, for the use of their concourse to showcase the creative Ikebana arrangements by our members,” said IIJB president, Datin Ong Kid Ching, who was very glad that public visitors at the popular mall had a glimpse of the various disciplines in the art of Ikebana.

IIJB members also took the opportunity to celebrate the birthday of Charter President, Tunku Shahariah Abdul Rahman, with a cake-cutting ceremony before a High Tea reception.

This was published in the May 2016 issue of the Iskandarian and on PeggyLoh.com

Friendship through Flowers - Online, by Chris Parry

In 2012, our chapter made its first steps into the digital world sending out its first digital newsletter by email, established a website on the internet and a facebook page was set up. All three established new resources for this chapter that changed a few things. Firstly, the costs of paper, printing and stamps to circulate information to members became history. So did the costs of printing photographs of events and the related efforts for distribution and storing of photos that now collects on our facebook page for everyone to access easily and is also archived for posterity.

Currently, our Historian, Dr. Tan Chew Ngee is in the process of sorting through our archives of photos and is having them scanned and digitized so that the pictorial history of our chapter can leave the dusty boxes and folders they are in to join all the new content online for our members to enjoy. As you can imagine this is a laborious task but it is hoped that the task will be completed in the next few months when you can look forward to the rich history of our chapter come alive again.

Photos and reports of our activities published on our Facebook page are now no longer only enjoyed by our members and their circle of friends - they are also available to the general public and have become a powerful tool to connect our Ikebana activities with members of other chapters and anyone who enjoys the art of floral arrangements.

Yet another phenomenon that has subsequently arisen is the creation of content around our activities by others on social media. Previously, this would only happen through the conventional route of journalistic articles in the press. Now, we see information, photos and videos of our chapter's activities circulated by business enterprises and individuals whenever we interact with the them. Click on the thumbnails below to see how our recent annual Exhibition was promoted and recorded through social media, driving content well beyond the usual reach of our chapter.

Along with the positive benefits that come with our newly acquired digital life, comes the challenges. Members of our executive committee have to now develop skills around digitization and our chapter members will also have to grow in their understanding of the needs for managing exposure and privacy.

The net result however is all positive - "friendship through flowers" is blossoming online. Enjoy and also be part of it - like, share, comment positively - so that our members, and the world, can see the artistry of Ikebana and also the social enjoyment that it generates in our chapter.

Travels with the President, by Datin Ong Kid Ching

Demonstration, Hyderabad Ikebana Festival, 22-26th Feb 2016
The President of Hyderabad Chapter 250 Mrs Uma Prasad extended an invitation to me to be the inaugural ikebana demonstrator at their Ikebana Festival that was held from 22nd to 26th Feb 2016 in Hyderabad. The invitation was in conjunction with the Hyderabad Chapter’s plan for an annual exhibition and demonstration by specially invited guests commencing from this year onwards and I had been invited to kick start this Festival.

It was an invitation that I accepted with both pleasure and humility as it was a great honour for me personally as well as for our Chapter. The guest of honour for the Ikebana Festival was Mr Sugiyama Kouji, the Consul General of Japan to Chennai who flew into Hyderabad with his charming wife specially for the event.

I was lucky to have the company of Puan Hajah Kamisah Hassan with me on the trip who was of tremendous help during my demonstration. I gave all together 7 arrangements, 4 from the Ohara school of Ikebana and 3 from the Sogetsu school and one of my signature Kake Hana.

The arrangements were all very well received. The next day, I conducted an origami and furushiki workshops. Mr and Mrs Sugiyama attended the workshop together with the members and all had a most enjoyable time.

Ikebana International 60th Anniversary, Tokyo,  January 26,2016

I attended the above event representing IIJB chapter 235 on 26th January 2016 at the Palace Hotel, Tokyo, Japan. I was invited to put up an ikebana arrangement (as shown in pic) and later gifted it to the founding chapter.

The event was graced by the Honorary President of Ikebana International HRH Princess Takamado. She presented an excellent speech touching on the role of ikebana in the turbulent world today.

After the sumptuous luncheon of a French cuisine, all present were treated to a Japanese traditional puppet theatre 'Bunraku'.

After which, members from the founding Chapter presented Japanese lion dance to welcome the New Year, which was quite similar to what we have here. The celebratory lunch ended with a lucky draw with prizes donated by the wives of the ambassadors of 20 over countries invited and the beautiful table centre pieces made by members Tokyo Founding Chapter.
