Message from Our President

Thank you dear members for electing me once again to serve as President of this chapter. With four past presidents serving alongside me on the board, we take seriously the challenges that face, not only this chapter, but Ikebana International worldwide with dwindling membership.

We must rejuvenate and revitalise the chapter with new blood. This means getting new members to join us bringing fresh ideas and energy. There is opportunity to do this if we can find ways to engage with the many new professional and expat communities that are emerging in our rapidly expanding city.

We are already underway with the planning of stimulating workshops and events that I hope will not only reset and recharge our own members but will also attract new ones to ensure our chapter remains relevant in a changing world.

I look forward to your support in sustaining our chapter's important role in the cultural and social fabric of our city.

Datin Ong Kid Ching

This years Annual General Meeting was held at the Mutiara Hotel accompanied by a buffet lunch and an Origami workshop facilitated by our member Tomoko Shinohara.

A vote was taken in favour of accepting variations from our bylaws in the selection process of the new Chapter board for 2015-16 by nomination chairman Puteri and the new board was subsequently approved.

Coffee with the President, 13 June 2015

The 2015-16 year got off to a fine start when newly elected President Datin Ong Kid Ching welcomed President of II Singapore Viola Yong, chapter members, and their guests to her home.

Guests arrived to find a bazaar table organised by Ways and Means Chairman Janet Yap full of Ikebana related merchandise.

Janet even had a new banner made specially for the task which turned out to be a resounding success as merchandise was quickly sold out.

Attendees were then treated to a talk by Architect Yap Yew Peng, founder of y.architects to give an interior designer's perspective on ikebana.

Mr Yap presented an overview of the kind of work his firm has been involved in and recommended, in a very interesting video format, spaces ideal for locating an ikebana arrangement in a home.

A mini exhibition of floral arrangements provided an opportunity for potential new members and guests to view the work of our members coordinated by their Ikebana teachers Datin Kid Ching and Datin Shirley Cheah for the Ohara and Sogetsu schools respectively. They provided detail for each arrangement, giving insight to the choices of material and techniques used.

During lunch there was a lucky draw where 5 very lucky guests who had filled in membership applications learnt that their subscription for 2015 -16 would be paid for by the chapter. In total 7 new members joined the chapter making this a very successful membership drive.

NEWS

Going Forward
At our recent first event for 2015-16 we set up two important developments that will be featured in upcoming events on a regular basis and we would like to encourage all our members to support these two initiatives.

Mini Exhibitions
We will be having a mini exhibition at all future events (except those that are day trips) to encourage members to exhibit arrangements.

Exhibiting is an important part of Ikebana - it improves the skill and artistry of the arranger as well as giving enjoyment and inspiration to the viewer.

Please work with your Ikebana teachers to coordinate exhibiting your arrangement at the next event.

Ikebana Bazaar
We want to continue with our successful sale of ikebana related merchandise by encouraging members to donate items per these guidelines:

- Preowned vases and containers,
- Books and magazines that are related to Ikebana, Japanese Culture and gardening
- tools, cutters, kenzans, aprons

These items are particularly helpful to members who are new students of Ikebana - please contact Ways and Means Chairman Janet Yap if you are able to contribute.
