Message from Our President

The Presidents speech at "Heritage of Flowers" event.
The theme for our exhibition this year Heritage of Flowers, celebrates the legacy of our chapter with a special tribute to its founder and charter president YAM Tunku Shahariah on the occasion of our chapter enjoying the anniversary of it charter twenty years ago. Today there are still familiar faces from the seventeen members that began Chapter 235’s journey - we also honor them today and all the others that have joined them over the years.
When Tunku encouraged me to join Ikebana Johor Bahru, she said - "you will meet many creative people". This is the legacy we still enjoy today here at chapter 235 as well as in chapters across the world - a chance to enjoy the talent and company of creative people. It is not just the arrangements but the many creative choices that end up being themes and concepts for events.
This creativity has a foundation in skill and knowledge of the floral arts as taught by the various schools of Ikebana. Today we get a chance to see how 5 accomplished ikebana artists from 5 different schools match creativity with the heritage of ideas from their chosen schools. Our 2 Ikebana teachers from Johor Bahru are joined by 3 more from the Singapore chapter who we are so grateful for sharing with us today an exciting joint demonstration of Ikenobo, Ryuseiha, Ohara, Sogetsu and Ichiyo.
Our exhibition upstairs is displayed by school so that we can enjoy our members’ efforts to show the different expressions of each school. Students of ikebana in Johor Bahru now have two very focussed resources, Ohara Circle founded by Datin Ong Kid Ching and Shirley Cheah’s Sogetsu Study Group - I am very proud of their endeavours in launching these initiatives this year.
As always, to my chapter Board, may I thank you for all your hard work in putting together this event, the members for their participation, and all our guests for coming today to enjoy their efforts which share as always is to cultivate a love of ikebana and find friendship through flowers.

Heritage of Flowers -Annual Exhibition, Demonstration & Lunch
June 2, 2014
IKEBANA International Johor Baru (IIJB) Chapter 235, celebrated the heritage of ikebana with a special tribute to charter president Tunku Shahariah Tuanku Abdul Rahman at its annual exhibition, recently.
Organised under the theme “Heritage of Flowers”, the event also celebrated the legacy of several schools of ikebana — Ikenobo, Ohara, Sogetsu, Ryuseiha and Ichiyo. Each school follows a particular set of rules and arrangement techniques.
While IIJB members recreated legacy arrangements by headmasters of the various schools of ikebana for the exhibition, the highlight of the event was a demonstration by guest representatives of the five schools.
Ikebana, or the Japanese art of flower arrangement, follows a fixed pattern of a triangle with three points representing heaven, earth and man. The key is to use as few plant materials as possible to compose an elegant arrangement.
In IIJB, members learn the art from experienced instructors as well as visiting masters. The emphasis is on linear perfection, colour, harmony, space and form, and the artist’s choice of plant materials is guided by the ideal of harmony between the materials and the vessels used.
“Today, there are still familiar faces among the 17 members who started the journey of Chapter 235 in Johor Baru. We honour them as well as the newer members who have joined IIJB over the years,” said IIJB president Gusti Puteri Retno Astrini.
She said it was Tunku Shahariah who encouraged her to join IIJB, where she would have the opportunity to meet many creative people.
“This is the privilege we still enjoy in Chapter 235 as well as in chapters around the world — the chance to enjoy the talent and company of creative people,” she added.
Guests had the pleasure of viewing ikebana arrangements from the schools of Sogetsu, Ohara and Ikenobo, presented by IIJB members.
These included an arrangement of the Ohara school by Ira Wolf; an arrangement of the Ikonobo school by Thanam Visvanathan-Suresh; and arrangements of the Sogetsu school by Dawn Ling and Rinataniwan Tan.
In IIJB, the Sogetsu-school ikebana study group is conducted by instructor Shirley Cheah, who is a student of Sogetsu Association Singapore president and Sogetsu master Kazue Kato Kim. The instructor of the Ohara-school study group is IIJB past president and Ohara School of Ikebana, Singapore Chapter president Datin Ong Kid Ching.
The IIJB heritage was presented in a collection of mementos and photos, and in Tunku Shahariah’s recounting of the inception of the JB chapter.
At the ikebana arrangement demonstration, Ikebana International Singapore was represented by Tan Bo Tan, who demonstrated the style of the Ikenobo school, Momoka Emmett, who showed the art of the Ryuseiha and Anju Bhardwaj, who did the Ichiyo school proud.
IIJB’s two instructors, Cheah and Ong each presented two arrangements of the Sogetsu and Ohara schools, respectively, to demonstrate how the same materials were used in different ways by the two schools.
The exhibition was a historic milestone for IIJB as it was the first time it was showcasing all five schools of ikebana in a single event.
Special guests in attendance were Japan Consul in Johor Baru Tsuneki Matsuda, Ikebana International Kuala Lumpur Chapter 72 president Datin Paulene Tunku Mu’tamir, Ikebana International Singapore Chapter 135 president Marvina Low and Chinese Women’s Association Singapore president Betty Chen.
Ikebana International Johor Baru membership is open to all with an interest in the Japanese art of flower arrangement.

Perfecting the art of arrangement
SHOWTIME: This year’s Ikebana International exhibition celebrates its various schools
"HERITAGE of Flowers" is the theme for the annual Ikebana International Johor Baru (IIJB), Chapter 235, exhibition planned for June 1 and 2 at the Puteri Pacific Hotel Johor Baru.
The aim of this year's exhibition is to celebrate the heritage of the various schools of ikebana with a special tribute to charter president Tunku Shahariah Tunku Abdul Rahman.
There are several schools of ikebana that follow a particular set of rules and arrangement techniques with the more popular Ikenobo, Ohara, Sogetsu, Koryu, Ryuseiha and Ichiyo schools of ikebana and in this year's exhibition, IIJB members will be creating legacy arrangements by various headmasters from selected schools.
IIJB members study ikebana or the art of Japanese flower arrangement that follows a fixed pattern of a triangle with three points that represent Heaven, Earth and Man, from experienced instructors as well as visiting ikebana masters.
The key consideration in ikebana is to use as few plants as possible to compose an elegant arrangement.
The emphasis is on linear perfection, colour, harmony, space and form, and the choice of plant materials is guided by the artist's desire to create harmony between the materials and vessels used.
The heritage of the IIJB chapter in the Sogetsu, Ohara and Ikenobo schools of ikebana will be showcased in the exhibition through arrangements by members of IIJB and guests who represent the schools of ikebana that they are studying.
The exhibition is eagerly anticipated because it is an opportunity for students in the study groups for the Sogetsu and Ohara schools here to exhibit their floral art.
Study group students in the Sogetsu and Ohara schools of ikebana meet twice a week for lessons and take examinations before going on to the next grade.
The study group in the Sogetsu school of ikebana is guided by instructor Shirley Cheah, an accomplished practitioner who has been a student of Master of Sogetsu and Sogetsu Association of Singapore president Kazue Kato Kim since 2007.
"An exhibition is a real opportunity to display the personality of the Sogetsu study group and for us to learn from experience," said Cheah on how her students are preparing a range of floral arrangements for the exhibition in the Sogetsu School of Ikebana.
While it is usually a more mature audience who may appreciate the art of flower arrangement, Cheah aims to promote ikebana to younger people and even students.
With more than 30 years' experience as an ikebana practitioner, past president of IIJB and the Ohara School of Ikebana president, Singapore Chapter, Datin Ong Kid Ching, is the instructor for the Ohara school study group.
A Third Master in the Ohara school of ikebana who also holds the Komon (Advisory Grade) in the Sogetsu school of ikebana in Japan, Ong encourages students in her study group to draw inspiration from plants and colours that exist in Nature and try to recreate Nature in their arrangements because Ohara arrangements have a lot of green as its base colour that emulate Nature and the seasons.
The highlight of the programme on June 2 is a guest demonstration in five schools of ikebana by accomplished ikebana practitioners like Tan Bo Tan who will demonstrate for the Ikenobo school, Momoka Emmett for the Ryuseiha school, Anju Bhardwaj for the Ichiyo school, Shirley Cheah for the Sogetsu school and Ong for the Ohara school.
Membership in Ikebana International Johor Baru is open to all who are interested in the Japanese art of flower arrangement.
Visit Facebook page Ikebana JB for membership enquiries and more information about the activities of IIJB Chapter 235.
A gallery of Ohara floral art is available on Ohara Circle while enquiries on the study group for the Sogetsu school of ikebana may be sent to sogetsujohor@gmail.com.
