Message from Our President
This has been an unusually short year because of the new year-end set by Ikebana International headquarters: June 1 to May 31, which explains a smaller number of events this year as well as an earlier AGM.
There is also a requirement to submit membership fees for the following year much earlier, so dear members please make sure to submit yours to our treasurer no later than our exhibition event on June 2 which will be a deadline we cannot miss.
We now prepare for our annual exhibition this year called Heritage of Flowers where we celebrate the heritage of our chapter with a special tribute to charter president YAM Tunku Shahariah on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of being a chartered chapter of Ikebana International.
We also celebrate the heritage of Ikebana Schools as we invite both our local teachers Shirley Cheah and Datin Ong Kid Ching to join guest demonstrators Tan Bo Tan, Momoko Emmott and Anju Bhardwaj from the Singapore chapter for an exciting simultaneous display of Five Schools of Ikebana.
I look forward to seeing your wonderful arrangements at our upcoming exhibition and a great event to close our year.

Sogetsu Home Sweet Home
Jan 18th 2014
Flowers are beautiful and inspiring! There is a incredible variety of flowers available these days and a unique and creative ikebana design can make a stunning visual statement at any occasion.
Sogetsu - one of the most famous of ikebana art-forms , aims to improve on the form and style of nature. To create something beautiful and more aesthetically pleasing than is ordinarily experienced on nature. Often as I arrange Sogetsu, I notice the fresh colour of the leaves , the beauty of nature, the interesting form and areas reducing this ancient art-form is. Recycled items are very much encouraged in the Sogetsu design .
It makes us look closely at everything growing or unused to be part of the arrangement .
Not only flowers but tree shapes , the curve of the branches , texture and finding ways to restore the beauty. The challenge is to use the material, the flowers and branches , the containers to express your ideas fully within the space available. But most of all the choice of container is very important in Ikebana - it does not just hold water but it completes the arrangement .
Friendship through flowers .......
Our motto that draws us together for the demonstration and workshop held at my home .
I am indeed honored to be given the opportunity to be the demonstrator .
The theme title-"Sogetsu At Home"
To start of the function, a Sogetsu floral design was created in the garden by using the combination of different shapes and colors of driftwood to form into a structure .
To commemorate the auspicious Chinese New Year, pussy willow was used together with Musang Heliconia .
The second arrangement - Sogetsu by the Pond .
Long flowing heliconia was used together with monstera leaves floating in the water .
Last but not least the finale was an arrangement- Vase stacking with Eustoma flowers and tea cup leaves .
Adding on, supporting members from II Singapore added on to the jovial ambience - cracking jokes from non other than Christopher Lim that made everyone laugh heartily. It was a light hearted moment that all the members had fun by being together as "Flower Family".
High Tea with an array of mouth watering food specially arranged by our hospitality chairman Fauziah. It was indeed a feast with a wide choice of delights to fill our tummies.
A rattan Workshop was held by Mr Edi Sowento from Surabaya on - "How to weave rattans into a Ball ". Soon Edi looked very much like a "celebrity" with all the ladies crowding around him and asking further on how to weave the rattan .
The fastest weaver was to be given a price of a completed rattan ball and it was indeed fun and laughter all the way with each member trying hard to be the first !!
I must say that it was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon with our dear friends , new and old. I am already looking forward to our next event !!!

President's Visit to Hawaii Honolulu Chapter 56
I had the great pleasure to attend an event at Honolulu Chapter 56 on the occasion of their New Year Luncheon. This was my first time attending an event at an international chapter outside Singapore and it was a memorable experience as it is a large chapter with a 53 year history.
There was an impressive diversity in its members - there were lawyers, civil servants, textile designers and men who worked in construction companies! I learned that members have the resource of 24 Ikebana teachers representing 8 schools of Ikebana to learn from. I enjoyed listening in on their informal discussion before lunch about their activities - which include teaching kids ikebana at the local community centers and at the Art Museum of Honolulu. This is the way they fulfil their mission: to perpetuate the Japanese art of Ikebana through education and community service
All table and side arrangements were by members using Equisedum, commonly known as horsetail, in honor of this being the Year of the Horse. There was a talk about the origins and development of ikebana and a demonstration of the two basic Ikenobo forms, Rikka and Shoka, as well as free style.
They had a bazaar that was useful to the new Ikebana enthusiast with used containers and ikebana books and also Japanese items like kimono fabrics, some baked goods and jewellery made by a member. There was a silent auction of an antique ceramic container from Japan donated by one of the members who was leaving which was sold for US $500 to benefit the chapter.
It was such an interesting visit to this chapter and I came away with great insights about how a large established chapter functions.
