President's Message
The Year Ahead 2013- 2014.
Thank you to my hard working committee for all their support and to all the members for their support this past year.
With what I have learnt during my Presidency this past year, I am prepared and ready to steer the club into some key directions that I feel strongly, will impact the club in two areas - the development of the art and craft of Ikebana inside the club and also how we engage with others outside the club so that we continue to attract others into our fold.
First I’d like to cultivate a greater learning culture around Ikebana within our club. Knowledge requires access to tools , so we need to create greater access to resources like books and the tools of Ikebana. Knowledge also requires teachers, so I will be calling on our Ikebana teachers in Johor Bahru- Shirley and Datin Kid Ching to play bigger roles as we build more events that revolve around the sharing of their knowledge. Doris Looi will also be an important resource for us as someone who is very creative in the floral arts. We will continue to invite ikebana experts to inspire us with their technical skills and artistry but this year we won’t just sit back to watch them, we will strive ourselves to master more skills of our own.
Ikebana like all creative arts requires practise and display so I want to encourage the important relationship between Ikebana and our home environment. Our gardens can provide materials for arrangements and our homes are our private galleries where we can display and share our creativity with family and guests. Ikebana is a wonderful way to enhance our home decor and regular practise will only increase our skills in this art.
I enjoy interacting with young people who bring the perspective of new ideas like the young photographer I engaged to capture our annual exhibition. I want to continue to share our platform with other young creatives in the future to allow their fresh outlook to keep our club vibrant. There is also a need to improve the ability of full time working members in our club to attend our events. Its time to review the accessibility of our events not just for our present members but also for working persons outside our club to know that if they join us they will be able to participate.
Making some changes doesn’t mean losing the wisdom of what has worked well for us before, its about finding a way forward that combines a successful past with an ability to adapt to a changing world. Dear members join me on this journey to keep our club fun, inspiring and rewarding for all of us. I look to you for your continued support, your ideas and your good company.
