President's Message
The theme for our annual exhibition this year celebrates the underlying universal appeal of Ikebana, a ‘language’ that knows no boundaries, the ‘Language of Flowers’.
It is a language that used to be spoken only by men, it then became a woman’s language in the 18th century and then in the 20th century an American woman took it out of Japan with a dream to share this way of communicating with flowers and foliage with the world. A dream that has now been realized with 165 chapters across 60 countries, and 8,500 members. This ancient botanical art that speaks of nature and flowers transcends time, transcends borders and continues to remain relevant today.
Our guest demonstrator Mrs Rekha Reddy is a perfect example of our international community. She brings not only her fluency in the Ohara tradition, of which she is a 1st master, but also a different perspective coming from Hyderabad, India where she is the President of Ikebana International, Hyderabad Chapter.
This year we challenged our members to develop an arrangement based on a single word in connection with our language theme. I am thrilled to see the creative results that has transpired.
As always, to my chapter Board, may I thank you for all your hard work in putting together this event, the members for their participation, and all our guests for coming to enjoy their efforts.

This years annual exhibition themed “Language of Flowers” was held at the Thistle hotel from 22nd to 23rd May, 2013. The exhibition, housed in the entrance lobby was opened by the Consul of Japan to Johor Mr. Tetsumi Murata followed by lunch and an ikebana demonstration by Mrs Rekha Reddy, President of Ikebana International, Hyderabad Chapter.
Members of the club and invited guests from our neighbouring Singapore Chapter were challenged this year to create an ikebana arrangement interpreting a single word of their choice. The results were spectacular showing the creativity of all the participants.
Rekha's demonstration of the Ohara school was mesmerizing. The audience was captured by her prowess and entertaining delivery. She created arrangements true to the Ohara style but with choices of material and combinations that resonated with our tropical environment and also of her native Hyderabad.
Over a sumptous eight course chinese lunch, copies of Rekha's book Petals and Palette that she very kindly donated , along with the table center pieces created by Datin Ong Kid Ching were auctioned to benefit the club. Master of Ceremonies, past president Thanam Visvanathan, navigated us through a delightful afternoon marking the highlight of this years event calendar.

English Tea Party, April 9, 2013
YAM Tunku Shahariah's birthday was celebrated this year with "An English Tea Party" replete with a classic English tea of scones, sandwiches, biscuits, fruits and cupcakes at the Thistle hotel.
The event was graced with the presence of special guest Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz. Many members from the Singapore chapter joined a huge turnout of our own club members to celebrate our beloved Charter President's birthday. Club President, YM Gusti Puteri Retno Astrini presented Tunku Shahariah with a beautiful shawl to mark the occasion.
Our very own members past presidents Shirley Cheah and Serena Chew treated us to a floral demonstration that was focussed on Sogetsu, which Shirley teaches. Although this was a first time for Serena demonstrating, the pair made a huge impression on the attendees with their wonderful displays. Christopher Lim narrated their work with great humour.
The event concluded with a fun game of charades and an impromptu auction of flowers donated by Shirley and Serena to benefit the club.
