Message from Our President
We start our year with a milestone - the 20th anniversary of Ikebana Johor Bahru as a chartered chapter of Ikebana International. It is a reminder of the pioneering work of our early members that created the foundation of our chapter and the efforts of our members through the years to maintain our legacy until today and into the future.
We, the committee are building a program of events this year to make all our members - new and old more comfortable and ‘at home’ with Ikebana. This is a theme I am passionate about this year - learning how this art form complements our lives ‘at home’.
We will be learning about ‘Ohara at home’ with our Ohara teacher Datin Kid Ching and Sogetsu Home Sweet Home' with our Sogetsu teacher Shirley Cheah who will both be inviting members into their lovely homes for a demonstration and workshop. Then, there will a very special weekend trip to my beautiful 'home' town Solo. Look out for more information about this upcoming trip.

Ikebana at Istana TAB
A beautiful afternoon in president’s resident, Istana TAB; at main entrance display a beautiful flower arrangement arranged by President Y.M Putri Gusti Retno Astrini. another 2 arrangements by Membership Chairperson , Shirley Cheah and Datin Lynda Loh showing our motto - friendship through flowers’ in the gathering.
Members and guests were warmly welcomed with a door gift of Furoshiki which was generously given by President Puteri. High tea with assorted local cuisine is served for our members & guests.
The program started with the arrangement using Furoshiki. We are fortunate to have Miss Hiroi to show us Japanese culture using furoshiki to make tissue box, wine holder, drinks holder , handbag, shopping bag and Lunch Box’s bag…very creative.
Miss Sally & Miss Phyllis from Sogetsu Singapore , demonstrated few flower arrangements using different type of local & imported flowers. Sally & Phyllis have artistic ability to transform the flowers with decorative details to develop the beauty of it. These two professional demonstrators gave members & guests a better insight about Sogetsu Floral Arrangements.
As this event is also a membership drive, guests are given opportunity to understand what Ikebana is by joining our program. We managed to recruits 3 new members in this event.The things like vases, shawls, fragrance dry flowers…. prepared by Miss Hawa - Way & Means Chairperson; fully sold and brought in RM501 to the club.
Members and guests had a highly enjoyable afternoon. Indeed, it was a beautiful way to start a new term of 2013-2014.

Ohara at Home
Datin Ong Kid Ching's home was the setting for an intimate demonstration of floral arrangements of the Ohara School. Members were walked around her home to view arrangements that she had already prepared as well as stopping at selected spots in her home to view at close hand the execution of techniques of this school.Datin Kid Ching took this opportunity to launch Ohara Circle, a group for Ikebana enthusiasts, focussed on the Ohara school. This initiative was welcomed by our Chapter President in her opening speech who was pleased to see the Ikebana community here in Johor Bahru grow to include more dedicated branches. Under Datin Kid Ching's guidance, the Ohara Circle will focus on active study through regular lessons, display of their work and field trips to research floral material. Go here >>> to learn more.
Members then proceeded to enjoy a Japanese themed tea that included sushi and udon and a workshop where they learned to make a 'gift of flowers' using the paper folding method of orikata to create a portable floral arrangement.

Sogetsu Demonstration at Kraftangan Kuala Lumpur.
Past president Shirley Cheah recently presented a demonstration of Sogetsu at the Kraftangan centre in Kuala Lumpur for their annual Karyaneka event.
