Souamiryu IKEBANA (Souami Style of Japanese Flower Arrangement).

Souamiryu Ikebana is a timehonored style of prestigious Japanese flower arrangement which was founded by Shinsou Souami during the Muromachi era more than 500 years ago. Shinsou Souami was one of the several Doboshu, a technical arts advisor for the 8th Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa. He was prominent in all fields of arts, including india ink painting, incense appreciation and landscape gardening. Shinsou Souami was considered one of the key persons of Muromachi culture. Some examples of his work still remain today, such as a fusamae (painting on a papered sliding door used as a room partition) in Daitokuji and Daisenin temples in Kyoto and a stone garden at Ryuanji temple. Collections of his Suibokuga (India ink paintings) are owned by the Boston Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the United States. Since being formed by Shinsou Souami, the stronghold of Souamiryu was based in Toujiin temple in Kyoto for some time. Following him, Souamiryu was led by Otsu and then was later succeeded by the chief priest of Zendouji temple in Nagoya. Finally, Souamiryu was resettled in Tokyo by the 17th Headmaster, Sofu Kongetsuan, in the middle of the Meiji era. In recent years, Soamiryu Ikebana has dedicated flowers at the Emperor’s Palace. The 18th Headmaster, Soutei Yokochi, was invited to arrange flowers at the enthronement of Emperor Hirohito. The 19th Headmaster, Soushoen Yokochi was requested to decorate the Togu Palace with an arrangement for the marriage ceremony of the Crown Prince Akihito (the present Emperor). The 20th Headmaster, Wakoh Yokochi, has received an Ikebana Award of Merit from Her Imperial Highness Princess Hitachi. The main feature of Souamiryu Ikebana is aiming to improve people’s spirit through creating an arrangement and therefore becoming one in spirit with the 6/5/2017 華道 相阿彌流|Souamiryu IKEBANA http://souami.jp/english.html 2/2 through creating an arrangement and therefore becoming one in spirit with the arrangement. The traditional precept of Souami says, “Flower arrangement is not to arrange the flowers, but to arrange the spirit. Firstly, observe decorum”. Souamiryu Ikebana puts emphasis on the desire to carry through faithfully with the foundation of classic Souami spirit and form and not lose its essence to the present climate. Presently, a modern form of arrangement based on a contemporary perception of art and space, created by the 19th Headmaster, Soushouen Yokochi, is included in Souami –ryu Ikebana. The practice of Souamiryu Ikebana includes both classic and modern forms..

CV of Midori Itai & Mei Yao

Midori Itai, a beloved granddaughter of a master Ikebana teacher, is also a devoted mother and wife of a lovely Japanese family.
Midori started studying the Souami-Ryu of Ikebana (華道 相阿彌流) with Tomita Sinka-Sensei in 2008 when she moved from Tokyo to Singapore. After returning to Tokyo, she sought instruction from the 21st Iemoto at the Headquarters of the Souami School in Kagurazaka (神樂坂), Tokyo and was awarded the prestigious “Master Level 1” certificate in 2014. She returned to Singapore in 2016 and this unexpected turn of event re-united her with Mei Yao, both of them now in a foreign land.
Midori had participated in numerous exhibitions in Singapore under her real name in English but in Tokyo under her flower name 坂井爽花, given by the 21st Iemoto of the Souami-Ryu, Yokochi Gahou-Sensei (橫地 画抱 家元先生).
------------------------
Mei Yao is a literary agent by profession who is also a naturalist and flower enthusiast.
She has studied western flower arrangements with Michael George, Remco van Vilet, Charles Mason, and Maridith Waga Parez of New York City and also with Mary Lou Pappas of the Westchester County, New York.
Mei started taking lessons from the Ohara School's master teacher Prof. Nishi Akihiro (小原流 西晃宏 先生) when she was temporarily relocated to Tokyo in February 2014. Through chance encounters, she was introduced to the 21st Headmaster/Lemoto Yokochi Gahou 華道 相阿彌流 横地 画抱 家元先生) by Ms. Midori Itai. Mei was honored with an invitation to become a disciple of the Souami Style of Ikebana studying directly under the guidance of the Lemoto and working alongside senior masters of this classic Japanese art form. Mei was the only “un-initiated” in the bi-weekly O-Keiko (稽古) practice sessions at the time.

After re-relocating to Singapore in February 2016, Mei became focused purely in practicing the intriguingly challenging Souami style of Ikebana.
Her unexpected friendship with Midori Itai-san and their fated mutual support in the studying of this art form has enabled Mei's steady attaining of the dexterity and mastery of this relatively intellectual Souami-Ryu of Ikebana, which is one of the oldest schools started by the artistic director --- Shinso Soami (
相阿彌 真相)--- of the legendary Japanese military general of the15th century, Yoshimasa Shogun (足利 義政 將軍).Souami-Ryu is one of the very few Ikebana schools which still keep strictly the rules and traditions of this uniquely Japanese heritage.
